Actress Ajarae Coleman, who faces deep pregnancy loss in the new narrative short film, Divine Mother, which recently premiered as part of the 2023 LA Shorts International Film Festival in Los Angeles.

What is the premise of Divine Mother?

Described as “heartbreaking but hopeful,” the film stars Ajarae opposite Skyler Bible as Aneka and Miguel, a couple on a road trip through the Southwest dealing with a miscarriage.

Divine Mother was written and directed Erika Navarro, and executive produced by Ajarae along with Parijat Deshpande, an integrative high-risk pregnancy specialist, best-selling author, and host of the Delivering Miracles podcast.

“When we were raising money for Divine Mother, countless parents shared that they felt extremely isolated in their pain and grief after experiencing loss,” explains Ajarae. “Though miscarriage is so common, many feel alone and even ashamed when it happens to them. It was an honor to bring this much-needed representation to the screen, and to tap into the strength, resilience and hope of a person who has experienced unimaginable loss, but knows in her heart that she is destined to be a mother.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1 in 4 clinical pregnancies ends in miscarriage. Plus, the American Journal of Epidemiology has reported that Black women have nearly twice the risk of miscarriage compared to White women. Divine Mother is the only film about miscarriage that features a Black woman.

Ajarae and the filmmakers have partnered with the Colette Tisdahl Foundation and Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support Canada (PILSC), who plans to use this film as a training tool.
