Who is Buzzworthy?

Actress turned filmmaker Angela Matemotja is releasing her award-winning dramatic feature film “Elevate” on-demand beginning July 2, 2019 on iTunes, Amazon Prime Video and Google Play.

The film showcases intertwining tales of homophobia, food addiction and racism and marks Angela’s debut feature and first-time deal with indie film specialist Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company. She produced it through her Matemotja Productions company with fellow producer Dele Ogundiran.

What’s “Elevate” about?

The storyline is explained as: following Trina, an overweight elevator switchboard operator who desperately tries to accomplish just one day of healthy eating. Overwhelmed by her abusive boss and by the trapped elevator occupants that reach out to her for help, her fitness guru provides the inspiration and escape that she craves — or does she? Ultimately, all of the occupants in this trapped world find themselves caught face-to-face with their inner demons.

Angela not only directed the film but she also stars in it along with Brianna Brown (CW’S Dynasty), Kit Williamson (creator/star Eastsiders) Alexis Carra (ABC’s Mixology) and Ben Jurand (Demolition Man).

The film gained momentum on the festival circuit since premiering in fall 2018, earning several awards for the project and the filmmaker.

Angela began her entertainment career as an actress. She is remembered by fans as ‘Christina’ in Tyler Perry’s “The Single Mom’s Club,” and also for appearing with Kevin Hart in “Something Like A Business.” On television, Angela has been seen on the popular shows “How I Met Your Mother,” “Bosch,” “Castle,” “Don’t Trust The B…,” and “The New Normal”.

As a director, Angela was nominated for an NAACP Award for the stage play “Sunshine For a Midnight Weary.” She first expanded her career when she wrote and directed the short film “The Encounter.” The film screened at more than 30 film festivals around the world and earned the Grand Jury Award at the White Sands Int’l FF and Honorable Mention at Toronto CommFFest, along with several festival nominations for Best Short Film. She followed it with the short, “The Untimely Concurrence,” taking home Best LGBTQ Film at AOF FF, San Francisco Black FF and San Diego Black FF, and the Silver Screen Award for Best Short Film at the Nevada Int’l FF.
