Female filmmakers Alethea Root and Jules Bruff, who teamed-up to create the feature film, Good Side of Bad, about siblings coming to terms with mental illness.
What is the premise of Good Side of Bad?
The film is based on Beverly Olevin’s Kirkus Indie Book of the Year and is described as: centering around Sara, Peter and Florence, three estranged adult siblings who come back together after the youngest jumps off a bridge to escape the people chasing her. Their family dysfunction grows further complicated as the real issue, schizophrenia, emerges, forcing the siblings to choose how they will show up for each other, and ultimately, for themselves.
Who helped with Good Side of Bad?
The female-lead project was directed by Alethea from a script she co-wrote and produced with Jules, who also stars alongside Lexi Simonsen and Alex Quijano as the three siblings. Rounding out the supporting cast are Myles Grier, David Haydn-Jones, Emmy winner Kim Estes, and Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Tess Harper.
The film was safely shot entirely during the pandemic with the assistance of line producer Jenny Napier, producer Katie Von Till, cinematographer Mark David and co-writer Ciera Danielle.

The production was awarded Women In Film’s ReFrame Stamp for distinction as a gender-balanced production. Shot on a micro-budget, the creative team is in the midst of a crowd-fundraising campaign to raise additional funds for post-production.
Why did Alethea Root and Jules Bruff want to make this film?
As COVID-19 continues to keep people apart, Alethea and Jules believe it is more important than ever to raise awareness about mental health.
“Our goal is to reduce and relieve the stigma surrounding living with and managing schizophrenia, while raising awareness that treatment is available and that all is not lost when living with mental illness,” add Jules.
What did they work on before Good Side of Bad?
Alethea and Jules previously collaborated on the feature film, Part Time Fabulous. The story revolves around clinical depression and took home eight film festival awards, including two Audience Choice Awards, the Film4Change Award, and the Exploring Humanity Award, and is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
When it comes to the subject matter of mental illness, Alethea shares, “Films are a powerful way to relieve the stigma around mental health. It’s obvious by the success of our first film that this subject matter resonates with audiences everywhere, which is why we want to continue bringing stories of hope, compassion and support to the screen.”
