Actress-turned-filmmaker Jamie Monahan highlights an unforeseen danger of the use of virtual reality in assisting with therapy in the sci-fi thriller short film, Lucid. The film is now playing on Facebook Watch, Instagram and YouTube from established sci-fi distributor DUST.
What is the premise of Lucid?
The film is described as: centering around Charlie (Jamie Monahan), a woman who can’t shake her symptoms of PTSD following a disturbing sexual assault. Repeated flashbacks, nightmares, and depression force her to seek VR therapy for help. As Charlie becomes addicted to the VR experiences, her friends fight desperately to bring her back into the real world.

Jamie premiered the film on the festival circuit to much successes, winning ‘Audience Choice Award’ at 2020 HollyShorts Monthly Screening Series, along with nominations at NYC WebFest and JTIFF.
Why did Jamie Monahan want to make this film?
Jamie was looking to break into the traditionally male-dominated sci-fi genre with a complicated female story, adding “I love creating complex female characters, putting them in difficult situations and watching them survive. The choices women make, or are forced to make, tell us a lot about their character and strength.”
What is Jamie Monahan’s background?
Jamie started as an actress and has expanded into an award-winning multi-hyphenate. Her diverse acting resume includes NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and MTV’s Hey Girl series; performing at the Met in the Grammy Award winning opera Das Rheingold and as a promotional puppeteer Off-Broadway in John Tartaglia’s ImagineOcean.
On the other side of the lens, Jamie produced and directed the highly respected short film The Wishing Tree, assistant directed the celebrated short Anatomy of an Orchid, produced and cast the proof of concept for Astral (greenlit by Adaptive Studios), and produced the Sundance New Voices Lab Finalist Flat Earth, Triad and Below the Belt.
In the theater, Jamie produced and directed Almost Maine at The Shell Theater and produced the Off-Broadway production of Swingtime Canteen at Cherry Lane Theatre.
