Who is Buzzworthy?
Actress Kathy Huynh-Phan who has emerged on the festival circuit starring as Alex in the new comedy web series Sideways Smile.
Sexuality and stereotypes are explored in this 6-episode series written and directed by Hang Nguyen. When first-generation Vietnamese-American Alex moves in with a new roommate, she discovers her bodily self-exploration is lagging far behind the norm. To remedy this, she reluctantly enrolls in a class that encourages her to investigate every inch of her body going against years of repressed sexual urges.
The project first gained momentum as an official grantee of the inaugural 2019 “Made In NY” Women’s Fund. It then continued to grab attention screening on the festival circuit at the Asians on Film Fest, DisOrient Asian American Film Fest, Portland Comedy Film Fest, Houston Asian American & Pacific Islander Film Fest, Atlanta Comedy Film Fest and most recently in New York at the Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF).
What else do we know about Kathy Huynh-Phan?
Kathy previously starred as a single mother on a quest to find a bathroom in Yuan Yuan’s comedic short Customers Only. She also appeared in numerous festival fav’s, including Jake and Julia, A Cute Girl’s Guide to Halloween, and L.U.G.S.
Theater goers might remember her from director Katherine Wilkerson’s latest production Lordes, as well as productions of The Boat People and The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine.
Kathy grew up in Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants. She graduated from Toronto’s York University with Honors in Theatre Studies, specialization in Devised Theatre, before heading to New York City to study at the Atlantic Acting School.
