Actress and Creator Susan Sassi drops Season 2 of her original web series, Cathy In Real Life. Streaming now on her YouTube channel When Susan Calls, Susan stars in this live-action parody based on Cathy Guisewite’s iconic daily comic strip character Cathy.
What is the premise of Cathy In Real Life?
The series is described as: After 34 years in the Sunday funnies, Cathy’s cartoon ended — ACK! Now, Cathy is back and hungrier for more than just chocolate cake. She’s updated her image, embraced feminism and is ready to take on the world as an actress. To do this, she’s hired a documentary crew to follow her journey as she attempts to crACK Hollywood.
From reality TV to primetime, to commercials, there isn’t anything she won’t do to make her big comebACK — as long as it doesn’t make her look fat — ACK!
What else do we know about Cathy In Real Life?
It started as a huge hit on the festival circuit when Susan launched Season 1 with screenings at Dances with Films, IFS Film Festival, CineFest, LA Comedy Fest, IndieWise Film Fest and WRPN.TV’s Shorts Festival. Based on that success, Susan released the first half of Season 2 earlier this year and more recently unveiled 4 more episodes showcasing Cathy’s feminist journey to Hollywood.
Why did Susan Sassi want to make this web series?
“When I first came up with the idea to parody Cathy, I was surprised to find a lot of women hate Cathy, for being a terrible stereotype for women. But she was the first cartoon to feature a working single woman. So, I created an absurd character that when you least expect it, sneaks in a little perspective. The underlying message being don’t judge a book by its cover and also the most feminist thing we can do is not judge or control other women, but let them be who they are.”
What is Susan Sassi’s background?
A South Jersey girl originally, Susan (like Cathy) is currently on her creative journey in Hollywood. She has honed her skills at UCB LA, iO West, Second City and Writing Machine and was selected as a writer the CBS Diversity Showcase. Her writing abilities have also emerged as a New Voices TV Writing Contest finalist, CineStory TV Writing Retreat and Fellowship finalist, ScreenCraft Film Fund semifinalist, Stage 32 TV Writing Contest semifinalist, NBC Writers on the Verge quarterfinalist, StageCraft Pilot Launch quarterfinalist, and Austin Film Fest Teleplay Competition quarterfinalist.
Susan also wrote and produced the successful musical, Victorian Courting and Zombies, selling out the LA Fringe Fest and then moving to UCB and iO West.
