What is the premise of On The Clock?

The film is described as: revealing the relationship between a young brother and sister while illuminating the very real but rarely spoke about issue of period poverty. When Sofia gets her first period, feeling ashamed and alone without any parents or guidance, she decides to skip school. Her older brother Lucas discovers the real cause of her concerns and sets out to secure the feminine products she needs, only to be confronted with many harsh realities along the way.

What else do we know about On The Clock?

Tayo Amos directed the film, from a script written by Katharine Stocker, as her Thesis Film while attending the famed USC School of Cinematic Arts, earning her the First Look Faculty Award for Excellence in Directing.

On The Clock made its premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Diversity in Cannes Showcase and the Creative Mind Group Showcase. It went on to a successful festival run in 2019, winning Best Narrative Short at the Los Angeles Diversity Film Festival and the Audience Award at the San Jose Int’l Film Festival.

Why did Tayo Amos want to make this film?

“I wasn’t planning on making a film about periods, but I was drawn to the characters and how a seemingly easy resource is dire for some,” explains Tayo Amos. “I was moved by the relationship between this brother and sister, alone against the world. Although Lucas feels like he has it altogether, he is not prepared for the inevitable challenges of raising a young woman. By the end, both siblings come of age in this film in different ways and it’s this dual character arc that drew me into wanting to tell this story.”

What is Tayo Amos’ background?

Before heading into filmmaking, Tayo was headed in a totally different direction. A first-generation Nigerian-American, she attended and graduated from Stanford University with a double major in Science, Technology, & Society and Spanish Literature. Her desire to tell stories that affect change led her to earn an M.F.A. from USC’s Film Production Program, where she also received the James Bridges Directing Scholarship. This rising talent was selected a 2019 Blackhouse Sundance Fellow, a 2014 Team Oscar member, and guest speaker at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

What’s next for Tayo Amos?

Tayo is currently finishing-up edits on A Blossom In The Night, a new short film starring Junior Nyong’o. Then, she is set to direct the film, Till It Comes True, with Lex Scott Davis (Superfly, The First Purge); and after that plans to direct Elite, a script she also penned.
